Righstuf is always having a big sell, you just have to find the items you want when the sales come up. It's how you save money in the long run. For example, my friend just got a movie for $17 via a rightstuf sale instead of the $30 that Best Buy is asking for it. So if you don't mind waiting for the deals, rightstuf will always save you more. I also have their membership, so I can usually buy cheaper via rightstuf than amazon too. The membership is the same as the "backstage pass" that you're talking about, more than likely. And it's very much worth it for the additional off you can get on sales.

Best Buy, Fye, and dealers at cons always mark their items up for maximum prices, which is why they'll always be more expensive. I bought a movie at AWA for $10 more than I could have if I had shopped around (but I had been searching for this Miyazaki movie for ages and didn't care at that time how much it was).

I browse plenty via online stores. I like them because they offer better deals and if I buy a certain price point (which I do--more anime for less!) then I get my shipping for free anyway. In the end, I save more than buying from the physical stores, at least in my area. That's my choice b/c the economy is bad and if I'm going to still invest in the anime industry (as I'm wont to do), then I need to conserve my pennies as best as possible.

Oh--and I've not even mentioned manga where there is *no* comparison to buying online to in the store b/c the bookstores never offer good sales.

We don't have a Borders around here, but I do catch glimpse of their sales via the newsletters they send to my inbox. I ♥ Borders a lot.

Except I just bought a bunch of single DVDs for $5-$11.

Season 1 of Kyou Kara Maou, all of Cromartie High School, first three DVDs of Wallflower, and...all of season Kino's Journey.

I'm pretty sure I bought some other stuff too.
